Set during the turmoil of the Civil War, the story relates the life of a young doctor, his family, close friends and associates.  It vividly provides medical intrigue that occurred at a US Military General Hospital in Philadelphia and in field hospitals.  The story is factual, the people are real.  In addition to medical plots, this work exposes personal relationships and burgeoning love affairs that evoke laughter and tears, while describing some of the horrors encountered on the battlefield of Gettysburg.

Henry Drane and Jonas Kauffman, two young doctors, formed a friendship from medical school days that bound them together throughout the turbulent period of the Civil War.  Both were surgeons.  One met the horrors of war in field hospitals at the scene of raging battles, while the other tended war's carnage amidst the rapid development of the largest mobilization of military hospitals in America’s history. Each contributes to the revolution of procedures   and standards taking place in the medical profession to ease the disease of camp life and mend the carnage of war.   Theirs is an unforgettable drama rich in adventure, love, sacrifice, courage, devotion, and tragedy.
